Elmo Hat Crochet Pattern (Plus Eyelash Yarn Guide!)

I’m tickled to show you my latest free pattern – it’s a crochet Elmo Hat! I show you how to use eyelash yarn to make a fun textured hat that’s sure to give you a laugh!

I admit, though, this one wasn’t as hard to work up because I had already done most of the basic work when I created the Cookie Monster Hat pattern.

The Elmo Hat Crochet Pattern uses the same exact hat base as the Cookie Monster (except it’s in a fire engine red color!) and it even has the same eyeballs and pupils (but not the derpy eyes! This time they’re symmetrical).

The only extra accessory of course is it’s large orange nose.

EYELASH YARN

But I did want to talk more about different eyelash yarn options and my recommendations for how to use the eyelash yarn to get the best texture you need. You can even see my video tutorial where I go a bit in depth about the various eyelash yarns and you can see the yarn in action.

So let’s talk yarn. I’ve experimented with 3 different kinds and here’s what I’ve found.

Eyelash Yarn Guide

Ice Yarn – Long Eyelash . (1.5in long)
This yarn like its name states has the longest eyelash length. It is the most luxurious and furriest. I measured it and the eyelash length was about 1.5in/3.8cm long. You may know that when I use Eyelash yarn I like to pair it up with another strand of worsted weight, acrylic yarn. What’s nice about the Long Eyelash yarn is that I only need 1 strand + 1 strand of the acrylic to get that furry texture I’m going for.

Ice Yarn – Eyelash (.75in long)
The regular Eyelash Ice Yarn is the shortest of the bunch and measures at about .75in/2cm long. Due to its short length as well as the eyelashes being less densely populated on the vine, when I’m using this yarn, I will need 2 strands of Eyelash + 1 strand of worsted weight, acrylic yarn for the hat.

Lion Brand – Fun Fur (1in long)
Lion Brand used to be my go-to for my eyelash yarn for some time, but I unfortunately found that most craft stores around me like Michaels and Joann seemed to stopped stocking them in store, and their color offering seemed to keep shrinking and shrinking. I was especially sad to see blue and orange colors go away. =(

But they do have Fun Fur in red available still. And you may have seen me make my Soot Sprites with this yarn as well. The eyelashes are medium length at about 1in/2.5in long. For the Fun Fur you will also need to use 2 strands of the Fun Fur yarn + 1 strand of the worsted weight, acrylic yarn.

Here’s a handy graphic for the yarn and how many strands to use to get that perfect furry texture! It’s a great guide to use for structured hats and amigurumi!

Love Elmo (and the Cookie Monster) and have previously used ICE Yarns eyelash, they used to do an eyelash and chenille yarn (both in same ball) really squishy and warm – I made a blanket for my son to go to University. The eyelash only balls were black for soot sprites ? I found the ready combined ball sometimes did a lot of twisting and the eyelash strand bunching up – not a great problem in a huge squishy blanket, hoping working from separate balls will make it easier to get an even fabric. Thanks for the patterns.

Oh that sounds like a very cool yarn where it had the eyelash and chenille combined and does sound warm indeed. I haven’t found too much of a problem of the strands twisting when I’m working them together from separate skeins but then again usually the projects aren’t that huge as blankets. Thanks for chiming in on your experience with eyelash yarn!
