It’s Fall and it’s Hat Season! And more importantly this month, it’s costume season! It’s one of my favorite times of the year and I thought it’d be the perfect time to show you guys how to create a Cookie Monster Hat – crochet Sesame Street style!
I’ve had this Cookie Monster Hat crochet pattern in my wheelhouse for a while, but I thought it’d be great to release it as a free crochet pattern so everyone can partake in the fun. I’ve written it up in 5 different sizes from toddler to adult!
So please do transform yourself into a Cookie Monster with this very furry crochet hat, but beware, you may, all of a sudden, get an insatiable craving for cookies!
I designed this crochet pattern by wanting to mimic the furry texture of the muppet so I knew the perfect yarn to use was eyelash yarn.
When working up this crochet Cookie Monster hat, you will need to use 1 strand of acrylic worsted weight yarn, and 1 strand of the eyelash yarn. You combine them together and work the 2 strands as if they are 1.
As you work your hat, you may find that one side of the hat tends to get more furrier than the other side. So you’ll want the furriest side to be the outside of the hat.
I plan to come out with more fun crochet projects (maybe some other furry creatures will make an appearance 😉 ), so be sure to subscribe to catch all my latest patterns!
Don’t forget to check out all my other free patterns as well such as this Elmo hat and Oscar hat!

ASSEMBLY
1. Weave and hide ends.
2. Stuff Eyeballs.
3. Sew Eyeballs onto Hat Base. I like to place the hat on a mannequin head and then play around with placement. Generally I like to sew about 7-8 Rounds from the bottom of the brim.
4. Sew Pupils onto Eyeballs. Sew towards center as if cross-eyed, and one eye should be sewn higher up and the other one sewn lower down. You do not want them to be symmetrical as you are going for the silly googly-eyed Cookier Monster look!
5. Hide and cut all ends.
6. Plop on the hat and eat a lot of Cookies!

December 13, 2019 at 9:28 pmIf I’m making this with pipsqueak yarn, would I have to use 2 strands as well? Thanks for any help.
Ami Amour
December 13, 2019 at 9:37 pmHi Myrna, I would experiment and see. If you can find a way to do the first 4 Rounds and get your hat diameter to be 3.5in (9cm) across, you’ll be in good shape. Experiment with 1 strand, or 2 strands, or even different hook sizes to get your gauge right. Best of luck to you!

January 13, 2020 at 2:30 pmWhat if I’m making a toddler hat? How big should it be after 4 rounds? Thank you.
Ami Amour
January 13, 2020 at 2:51 pmIt should be the same gauge. After 4 Rounds, the diameter should equal 3.5in (9cm) long and just continue following the pattern for the toddler afterwards!
