Calvin and Hobbes – Free Crochet Pattern

So, one of the crochet pattern requests I’ve received the most, by far, is for my Calvin doll from the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip. Through the years, I’ve made various versions of Calvin.

However, one of the reasons it took me so long to release this Calvin and Hobbes crochet pattern is that I was never completely satisfied with the way he looked in the previous versions I’ve made.

Crochet Calvin and Hobbes

As Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic strip of all time, I really wanted to create his classic look with the open mouth and the famous grin.

So FINALLY, I buckled down and crafted what I now consider to be my favorite version with this new and improved Open Mouth Calvin and Hobbes crochet pattern.

If you’re curious about my previous version, here’s how he looked like. He’s still cute, but I just slapped on a black felt patch for his mouth and called it a day. 😂

And then ta-dah, here is the transformation to the upgraded Open Mouth Calvin version. Which one do you prefer?

So here is Calvin in all the spirit of fun, mischief, and adventure! Of course everywhere he goes, his best friend Hobbes goes as well. They truly are inseparable.

They are the very best of friends and they love going on adventures with their red wagon! Here they are going down a hill, wheee!

I’m also super happy to add this Calvin crochet pattern to my Open Mouth Amigurumi series. It’s a great addition because his head is a bigger size than my previous Open Mouth amigurumis, so if you were looking for a larger open mouth base, this would work quite well too.

Calvin’s other notable features include his striped red and black t-shirt, black shorts, red high top sneakers, and spiky hair.

I know it’s been a long time coming, but I hope you’ll enjoy making this crochet Calvin doll. (And also if you haven’t already, don’t forget to crochet Hobbbes too!) Calvin hangs around right now in my living room, together with Hobbes, inside his red wagon and it always makes me smile to see him. And he grins right back at me! 😉

Crocheting Calvin Sneakers

CALVIN AMIGURUMI ASSEMBLY

1. Sew the Nose and Ears onto the Head. (For the whole assembly process, you can also watch this video here)

Nose Placement – Sew after 4 Rounds down from the Head Ridge

Ear Placement – Sew right where the ends of the mouth are. The top of the ear should line up at around the same round where the nose was sewn at, whereas the bottom of the ear should line up with where the ends of the mouth meet.

Assembling Calvin's Head

2. Cut 2 small oval shapes from black felt for the eyes. The height of the eyes should be about the height of 2 Rounds. Placement: Glue with Fabri-tac right above the nose and at the ends of each side of the nose.

3. Cut a tongue shape from pink felt. Glue into the middle of the mouth with Fabri-tac.

4. Sew Hair Base onto Head. You will sew around the hair border except when it comes to the top of the hair (the round section at the top). For that section, you will sew down on the line after the first Round of the hair. This way a bit of the yellow hair will hang over and create a more natural look. (See the third photo below to see where you sew down for the section at the top of the hair.)

Calvin Hair Assembly Photo Tutorial

5. Sew Hair Spikes into place on top of the Head. Hair Spikes #1 will be in front, Hair Spikes #2 will be in the middle, and Hair Spikes #3 will be at the very end. I like to stagger each Hair Spike. See photo below for reference.

6. Sew Head onto Body.

7. Sew Shoes to Pants.

8. Sew Arms to top of the Shirt.

9. Sew 4 Fingers onto each Hand.

I love Calvin and Hobbes and this is amazing. Thank you so much for your detailed instructions and pattern. I loved the first Calvin but this open mouthed one is even more adorable. I think you captured the whimsy and expression of this comic!
